H. Stephen Lieber, CAE
A seasoned executive, Steve Lieber brings to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) nearly 20 years in healthcare, 17 of them in healthcare-related association management.
Lieber served as CEO of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) for nearly nine years before accepting a position with the American Hospital Association in 1998 as Vice President, Division of Personal Membership Groups. Prior experience includes Vice President of Operations and Director of Hospital Information Services for the Illinois Hospital Association; Senior Budget Analyst for the Illinois Bureau of the Budget, and Assistant Administrator, Research and Statistics for Arkansas Social Services.
Steve's primary functions at HIMSS are twofold: In his organizational leadership role, he is responsible for setting the society's strategic direction in cooperation with governing board and staff; and in his organizational management and program development role, he has emphasized enhancement of HIMSS' educational programs, development of advocacy and professional affairs programs, and expansion of the Society's publications/publishing initiatives.
Steve is passionate when talking about the future of technology and healthcare, citing, for example, such issues as utilizing data for clinical decisions, systems integration and confidentiality. He believes that HIMSS is positioned to become an even stronger player in the healthcare arena through utilization of tools such as the Internet. He sees the Internet as a major focus for future educational programming and emerging technologies as providing the greatest opportunities for the Society's growth.
Steve has been a Certified Association Executive (CAE) since 1994, and is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and Association Forum of Chicagoland. He is also a Vice President, Board of Education, School District 64, Park Ridge-Niles, IL. Steve and his family live in Park Ridge, IL.
Steve received an MA in Health Policy and Administration from the University of Chicago, a BA in Psychology from the University of Arkansas, and has completed additional course work at the graduate schools of business at both universities and at the Keller Graduate School of Management.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society provides leadership in healthcare for the management of technology, information, and change through publications, educational opportunities, and member services. HIMSS has more than 41 chapters and more than 12,000 members working in healthcare organizations throughout the world. Members include healthcare professionals in hospitals, corporate healthcare systems, clinical practice groups, vendor organizations, healthcare consulting firms, and government settings in professional levels ranging from senior staff to CIOs and CEOs.
