Walter R. Menning, FHIMSS, is Chair of the Board of Directors (2000/2001) of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), one of the country’s largest and most prestigious healthcare technology associations, which provides leadership in healthcare for the management of systems, information, and change,

As HIMSS Chair, Menning presides at all meetings of the Board of Directors and the annual meeting of the membership, and provides leadership and direction to the development of policies and programs of the Society.

Professionally, Menning is Vice Chair, Information Systems, Mayo Foundation, Rochester, MN, and is responsible for the Information Services organization. This department is a Mayo-wide resource to provide information systems and related services, including application development and support, data center operations, technical advisory services, networked systems, and information infrastructure deployment. He has held positions of similar responsibility at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, and at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Menning is a recipient of the HIMSS/CHIME John E. Gall CIO of the Year Award (1997) and has served as a member of the HIMSS Nominating Committee, the IS Program Planning Committee, and as an Annual Conference Paper Reviewer. He also was guest co-editor of the HIMSS Journal of Healthcare Information Management Spring ’98 issue titled "Protecting the Security and Confidentiality of Healthcare Information."

Menning, who has made several presentations at HIMSS Annual Conferences, also chaired the board-level HIMSS Search and Transition Task Force to select the association’s new president/CEO.

Menning holds a BS in Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy and an MS degree from Sloan School of Management, MIT.
