New Exhibits and Features

  • "Views from the Top": A new level of educational offerings with well-known, dynamic leaders speaking on topics ranging from organizational change to technology to ROI to computer hacking and privacy.
  • Business-to-Business Marketplace: An opportunity for vendors to coordinate their products and services with others to develop solutions for end users. The Marketplace, developed in collaboration with EC Media Group and Center for Healthcare Information Management (CHIM), includes education sessions, a panel discussion with venture capitalists and Wall Street analysts, and more.
  • Exhibit Floor Education Sessions: Exhibitors will participate in a specially designed, non-commercial educational program to offer practical, informative, education sessions on the exhibit floor.
  • Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Year Two: Year Two of the IHE initiative includes demonstrations on broader access to images and reports throughout the enterprise, image presentation consistency, reconciliation of unknown patient data, and other workflow enhancements and transactions. IHE is co-sponsored by HIMSS and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
  • CyberCafe: A dedicated, onsite work area providing modem hookups and more will be available to Conference attendees.
  • HIMSS 2001 Daily News Online: In addition to onsite distribution of printed copies, highlights of the HIMSS 2001 Daily News will be updated and posted to the HIMSS Web site daily.

Speakers

  • General Wesley K. Clark (Keynote Speaker, 8-9:30 a.m., Feb. 5): Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Clark, the nation's most highly decorated military officer since former President and General Dwight D. Eisenhower and one of the U.S. Army’s technology pioneers, will discuss "Strategic Leadership in the Information Age."
  • Tom Peters (General Session, 1-2:30 p.m., Feb. 7): Peters, "the guru of management," will present his unconventional approach to the importance of work and innovation.
  • Seaborn Beck Weathers, MD (Closing Session, 1-2:30 p.m., Feb. 8): Dr. Weathers, left for dead on a slope of Mt. Everest, will tell of his adventures, struggle against the forces of nature, and the triumph of the human spirit.

Education and Onsite Activities (Highlights)

More than 400 industry professionals will present more than 175 peer-reviewed panel, poster, and tutorial sessions. Among the topic categories are Leadership/Management, Reengineering/Performance Improvement, Clinical Systems, Legal Aspects of Healthcare IT/Legislative and Regulatory Issues, Case Management, IT Infrastructure and Systems Implementation and Management, Internet/Intranet, Security and Confidentiality, Telecommunications, and e-Commerce/e-Health.

Additional Features and Activities

  • Career Planning Workshop, 1-4 p.m., Feb. 6: Chip Madera, of Dynamic Communications, Inc., will lead an interactive professional development and career planning workshop titled, "BAAAMM!!! How to Take Your Career Up a Notch!"
  • 12th Annual HIMSS Leadership Survey: Internet participation in the Survey, which is designed to collect data and track opinions of top-level healthcare decision-makers on issues of priority and concern in healthcare IT, will be at www.himss.org, and onsite. Preliminary results will be presented at onsite press conference.
  • U.S. Department of Defense/Military Health System Demonstration Area: Cutting-edge military healthcare management, information systems, and technologies, including Internet/intranet, electronic data interchange, e-commerce, video teleconferencing, data warehousing, healthcare resources, clinical information systems, and healthcare re-engineering.
  • Health Facility Tour, Ochsner Foundation Hospital's new Critical Care Tower: State-of-the-art facility housing Emergency, Intensive Care Unit, and Surgery departments. Tour participants will see the latest in healthcare technology, such as digital X-ray stations, wireless patient registration, electronic "grease boards," and electronic medical record systems.
  • Career Development Activities: Professional development and career planning workshops offer the opportunity to expand a professional’s portfolio of skills. Topics include clinical systems, information systems, management engineering, and telecommunications. 2001 HIMSS Job Fair and Career Match also takes place throughout the Conference.
  • Interactive Conference Planner: 2001 HIMSS Website contains a session finder to search education sessions and create a personalized Conference schedule.
  • Hi-Tech Posters: Interactive, computer-based poster sessions.
  • Small Roundtable Discussions: Peer-to-peer problem-solving forums for small groups to meet, brainstorm, and exchange ideas.

Entertainment

To truly experience the tastes, sounds, and excitement of New Orleans, attendees can spend an evening at Mardi Gras World, home of the floats, carnival creations and gigantic papier-mâché characters for the Mardi Gras parade. Featured entertainers will be the Grammy award-winning Neville Brothers.

Attendees/Exhibitors

Attendance is expected to surpass 17,000 healthcare professionals in hospitals, corporate healthcare systems, clinical practice groups, vendor organizations, healthcare consulting firms, and government settings in professional levels ranging from senior staff to CIOs and CEOs. Some 800 vendors will showcase a variety of HIT-related products and services.
